Schachenmayr Catania
100% mercerized cotton · OEKO-TEX & toy safe · the classic for amigurumi
About this yarn
Schachenmayr Catania is a premium cotton yarn from the German brand Schachenmayr, known for its quality since 1822. The 100% cotton is combed, gassed, and mercerized — a three-step process that ensures a silky sheen, a smooth surface, and superior color retention.
These tight, sharply defined stitches make Catania the worldwide favorite for amigurumi. The yarn is also OEKO-TEX Class I certified and complies with the European toy standard, making it safe for baby toys and children under three years old.
One ball weighs 50 grams and is approximately 125 meters long.
What do you use Catania for?
The smooth, strong thread is ideal for precision work and is loved by amigurumi makers:
· Amigurumi and toys – sharp stitches; safe thanks to certification.
· Baby clothes – soft and skin-friendly.
· Summer clothes – cool and light to wear.
· Accessories and fine crochet work – bags, doilies, and details.
Catania is also one of our cotton yarns.
Helpful tips
· Knit or crochet with 2.5–3.5 mm needles/hooks; for amigurumi, you usually work with 2.5 mm for dense, neat stitches.
· Wash a new project separately for the first time at a slightly higher temperature — this helps fix the color.
· Working on a larger piece? Use balls with the same dye lot number for consistent color.
Care
Catania can be machine washed at 40 °C on a delicate cycle (the very first wash at 60 °C helps fix the color). Lay your work flat to dry, out of direct sunlight, and iron with steam at a moderate temperature if necessary.
